Boca Chica, Dominican Republic

An eagle's eye view of living in the Dominican Republic from someone who actually lives in the Dominican Republic!

For most people, the thought of moving to a "third world country" is daunting. Where do I live? Is it cheap? Is it safe? What will I eat? What is everyday life like? What if I don't speak the language? How will I get around? What if I get sick? So many questions and not enough answers. Oh, there are plenty of websites out there, but do those people actually live there?

So enters the "Dominican Treasures" blog. We actually live in Boca Chica, Dominican Republic. We walk the streets, shop in the shops, eat the food, and are learning the language. Let us show you what living in the Dominican Republic is REALLY like. That way you'll know for sure if it's for you.

As we go about life here we will be updating our blog with pictures and little stories of our everyday lives. Feel free to leave comments or email us with questions. We'd be more than happy to help in any way.

Food Boca Chica Dominican Republic

Food here is GREAT . They have these little stores called colmado's , they are like a little mini mart , with prices to match. They are not the best deal in town . But they are right there for convenience. Then there is the Super Colmado - Prices a little better like a regular grocery store. Here is where a good blog will help you out. In the morning there is a little truck that comes around with eggs, bananas , platanos , pineapples , yucca , potatoes , onions . You know he is around because they blare the prices on this mega phone that you can hardly understand, but he's barking out the price so listen carefully . Anther note to add here , Dominicans are poor and will take advantage of you if you let them. There is also a bakery on every corner called a panderia , the bread prices are great.

At night they also have street vendors that have great food. Two or three dollars (66 or 99 pesos ) will get you plenty of food . The beer is pretty cheap like a quart very cold for two dollars or so. Again pay attention to what others pay, learn words like pollo , cerdo , carne de vaca , and speak up. I waited in line for 20 minutes one time and 15 people got feed who were in line after me.

Now for the restaurants . They are very good , loads of sea food where we are at the moment. The Italian pizza was very good , but you will pay for it. To pricey for my wife and I . We are trying to stay here for a long time . As we test restaurants we will post for travelers who go to Boca Chica . Photos will be added to this post later .
